We are honored to journey with you and looking at the biblical truths found in 1 John. Stand with me as we get to worship our king. >> Richard: Yes, let's worship the king. "Unstoppable God" >> Richard: Yes, our God is unstoppable. His kingdom is unstoppable. Our God reigns forever more. Don't you agree? "One Thing Remains" >> Richard: Yes. How many of you are glad the love of God never fails you? Thank you for worshiping with us, church. You may be seated. >> Corey: Good morning. The Bible says that death and life are in the power of the tongue. As I was reading that, I was reminded that we are powerful with our words. And I came into my office one day and it was a rough morning and I found this rock sitting in my office and it says "you've got this." No matter what the devil throws at me or pressures come my way, I've got this, not because of me, but because of Him. I don't know how your week has been. Kids, maybe you had a rough time with that new teacher. Mom and dad, maybe it was a rough week for you as the kids are driving you crazy. Hello. I want to encourage you, you've got this. We're going to have the power of death and life in our tongue. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens now. It is not about us, but about our God and He is powerful. Go encourage someone. >> Grant: Amen. Thanks, Corey. We are about to enter our time of communion. If you're at home, gather your supplies or if you're here get out your packets. Troy and Rachel Matthys are going to be leading us. >> Rachel: My name is Rachel Matthys and this is my husband Troy. We are so glad to lead you. His body that was given for us and the bloodshed represented by the cup. Let's pray. Lord Jesus Christ, we are so humbled to be able to come before you every single week. Lord God, we are thankful that we get to partake this together and be reminded of your body that was broken. Lord Jesus, your body that was bruised and broken and crushed for us so we could be restored to our father. Lord Jesus, we thank you for that restoration, of the broken relationship that started way back in the garden. Jesus, we thank you for your blood that was shed, your blood that flowed so it could wash away every stain that sin has left on us so that when we come before you and stand before you, we are presented as whole and complete and washed white as snow. We thank you for loving us enough to make that sacrifice. Don't let us take it for granted, Lord. Thank you for letting us share this together as a united body in Christ. This power is phenomenal. We pray that it would be a light and a reminder to the rest of the world that there is restoration from a broken and fallen world. We thank you in Jesus' name. Amen. Let's partake together. >> Troy: The scripture reading this morning is from 1 Peter 1:21-23 Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory. You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart. For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. "Jesus Messiah" >> Richard: Why don't we all stand together and continue to worship the Lord Jesus this morning. "Jesus Messiah" >> Richard: Amen. Thank you, church, you may be seated. >> Grant: Well, it is time to pray over our offering. Before we do, let me remind you that giving online is safe, secure, and easy to set up. If you're here, we have giving boxes at the exits or you can text to give. This church doesn't function without the tithes and the offerings that go to support the ministries of everything we do here, but it also goes to bless and impact our community for Christ as well as our international mission. Thank you for your hearts. Let's go to the Lord in prayer. Father, you are good. Your love endures forever. You are Jesus, messiah, Lord of all. Whether we only have pennies to bring before you or great riches, we know that these are from you and for you. We give you our time, talents, possessions and say, Father, use them for your will and your kingdom. We trust you and pray this in the powerful name of Jesus. >> Kyle: My name is Kyle and I want to invite you to join me for our first conversations intensive. [Indistinct chatter] " King Of My Heart" >> Richard: Sing it out, church. Let's sing that chorus one more time, church. Praise the Lord. Amen, church. You may be seated. >> Shane: Welcome to those watching online. I'm Shane, the pastoral care minister. We are in our 1 John series walking in the light. We want to congratulate Aelita Matytsina. She was baptized a few weeks ago. [Applause] She is the adult daughter of George Kruashvili and Vlada Matytsin. I think you're moving back to New York this week? All right. Our prayers go with you. We're so thrilled that we saw the new birth in your life and may God go with you. [Applause] >> Shane: Well, friends, I've got some fantastic news recently. You see, I received this e-mail and you are not going to believe my luck. A prince from my jeeria e-mailed me and he needs some help and he needs help. What are the odds of a Nigerian prince, royalty, e-mailing me locally. They need to get out of Nigeria. They want to send it to my bank account and I get to keep 10%. So I sent them my bank account information a few weeks ago and things seemed to be fine now they need my social security number to make sure it's me. What do you think I should do, do it? Don't worry, honey, I didn't do that. You know, maybe they're trying to deceive me. Scams like this unfortunately do work. One company calculated that this specific e-mail has cost the average victim over $2,000. That's no invoke. So don't be deceived by such things. You've been warned. So far in the 1 John, he is giving warnings. He gave warnings to the Christians of his day and they are applicable to us. He gives warning of loving worldliness more than we love God. And later in this series you'll see that he gives a warning about the lack of love. He warns about truth versus lies and light versus darkness. There are two themes, one is that God is light and we must walk in his light. God is light and those who know and love Jesus must love like him. God is light. God is love. Walk accordingly. But the warning we get here in 1 John 2:18-27 Is how to deal with deceivers and those who would lead you astray. These deceivers are worse than those behind the scam e-mails. They're spreading false teachings of the very nature and identity of Jesus Christ, deceiving about who Jesus really is. John writes: I am writing to warn you about those who want to lead you astray. Hoe warns them in verse 22. Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist he denies the Father and the Son. He is warning them because these false teachers are trying to deceive them about Jesus, distorting the truth, denying that Jesus is not the messiah. Minimizing the authority of Jesus, claiming that Jesus is not Christ or not king. So let's dig into these verses and what is the meaning of this term anti-Christ? They reject the foundation of our faith. They reject that Jesus is the Christ, the messiah, the anointed one of God. They are false teachers. They say he's not the flesh. They recollect his divinity. They might try to redefine him. He's good, but he's not God. He's a son of God. He's not the son of God sent in the flesh. Note this, the spirit of the anti-Christ always diminishes the person and work of Christ. Any teacher that comes to you diminishing in any way the person or the work of Christ, do not trust that teacher. Now, let me pause and note that both here and in the book of Revelation, there is a distinction between Anti-Christ and little anti-Christ. The one with a capital A will come and deceive us. This future ultimate Anti-Christ will be given great authority and power and many will follow and worship him. We as followers of the true messiah of God need not fear this. We follow the king of kings and the Lord of Lords. Can I get an amen to that. We have the king and we are in his kingdom. We don't need to worry about this anti-Christ. We know how this show ends. He is victorious over sin and Satan and over death itself. We need to be careful of false teachers and the anti-Christ, but we have nothing to fear. Here John is talking about these little anti-Christs, who are against Christ and they try to diminish his divinity. He rejects the nature of our faith, the identity of the son of God. Second, an anti-Christ abandons the church. Physically they may desert the foilship, stay among us for a while and be deceivers, but they will eventually abandon the church. They went out for us but did not belong to us. If they belonged to us, they wouldn't do this. These anti-Christs, they left and bugged out. I can't help but think of the words of Jesus that John recorded in chapter 10. Jesus says, I'm the shepherd, the true shepherd knows his sheep and the sheep know the shepherd. They follow him and they know his voice. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep, but the hired hand abandons the sheep and runs away when trouble comes. John continued. [Text on screen] Just like in Bible times, false teachers, deceptive preachers are going to show their true nature and diminish Christ in some way, but you will see they don't really know or love their followers, but use them to fatten their wallets and egos. They won't be faithful like a good shepherd that is shepherding God's people because they know the voice of the shepherd. They will spiritually deny the faith. [Text on screen] Again, we see what we know and believe about Jesus Christ is crucial, critical, the main thing above all else, but to those her ticks Jesus was important. She was significant, but he wasn't the savior. Let me say a few words about what an anti-Christ is not in case you're worried about that. John here is not talking about Christians who have doubts. He's not talking about Christians who backslide into sin. He's not talking about Christians who stray from the way of Jesus for some time. That's not an anti-Christ. He's not talking about interpretation of second and third order doctrines in Biblical teachings. That's not an anti-Christ. The anti-trustee is diminishing the work of Jesus. The foundational things of our faith, his atoning faith. It's almost like John anticipated that there might be worries and anxiety because of this strong, straightforward warning that he's giving them. In verse 20 he says. [Text on screen] This is what he's promised us, even eternal life. Did you note in those couple passages, the two wonderful and powerful things he gave us. He first said we have the Holy Spirit and that spirit that anointed Christ anoints us and dwells in us. Second, we know God's saving truth, we have his word. The same Holy Spirit that dwells in us serves truth and it is the same spirit that inspired John and the other biblical writers. [Text on screen] What a wonderful gift we have there. John implores us to recognize the spirit of God not akin to those against Christ. He reminds us that we knows the truth. We have our share of deceivers and false teachers today as well, right. One thing we have to deal is we live in the information age. Boy, there sure is a lot of information out there. Anything and everything. So much information and so little wisdom. Whether you're into health, politics, gastronomy, theology, you can find every and any theory or perspective on what you want. The rabbit holes are endless and so many are dark holes when you start getting into them. So many experts, so much information, so many links to clink. Maximized for tracking optimization. Information can be commodified and weaponized like never before. You know this. We're living in that world. I'm not anti-digital or anti-internet. These tools can be helpful if they're used with wisdom and responsibility. Some of the most useful tools can be the most dangerous tools. A fool with a flame-thrower still has a flame-thrower. Wisdom comes from the Lord and in the community he's forming among us his family, the church. Brett McCraken has a book that helps us triage the knowledge and connection. I'm going to run through the four things he says to triage. He says we need to trust the near over the far. Local and embodied is better than distant and intangible. This goes for our sources of knowledge and wisdom. I can better gauge the electrocute and the wisdom when I see that person living out or not the principles that they teach. Do they practice what they preach? I can get information from anywhere, but wisdom is borne out of and shared from real-life relationships. Instead of listening to the online fearmongering or the click bait tools. Invest your time and energy in the people you can know who know you. People who know you and you can be known by fully in a real relationship. Second, we should time-tested over breaking buzz. The news cycle really fast. I don't have time to get over the last outrage before the next offending headline comes along. Showing down and taking our time to discern things. Allowing our God-informed reason to catch up with our emotion is a good thing. Let's take a breath and not fall for the breaking buzz. The third thing is to trust holistic wisdom over near head knowledge. We need spiritual life formation not just information. What good is how smart I am if I'm not growing in the character of Christ? I need to be around wise faithful Christians more than those whose lives bear little fruit of the spirit. Finally, we should lean into community over autonomy. One of the great lies and individuals of our age is individualism and autonomy. It's a big one. Our foolish digital age can profoundly isolate us from true community. Its very algorithmic structure can cater that our preferred reality silo. We're urged to follow your heart and find your own truth in yourself. Did you know that proverbs 3-5 says lean not on your own understanding. Our hearts will deceive us time and again. Let me ask you a question. Have you ever rationalized your way into a room are really bad decision, listening to your heart? It can go really bad. One of the greatest gifts God has given us for wisdom is community. We need accountability of save and loving community to help us learn and grow. Discernment and disciple ship. Learning his word in our community with our fellow apprentices is so vital. The Bible makes us wise by revealing God who is the source and standard. The church helps to make us wise by orienting our life rhythms and surrounding ourselves with other wisdom seekers. The spirit of God will guide you into all truth, the spirit, the church, and the word. These are fantastic blessings you have in Christ. Use them. I want to circle back to two key words, anointing and abiding. It is used in the Old Testament to refer to the anoints of a high priest or a king. John says just as Jesus was appointed by the Holy Spirit, we also are anointed. [Text on screen] There is that other key word, abiding, remaining. In had a lot of the English translations it is abiding. The Greek term means to stay in one place, to live settled into a certain reality of Christ. John uses it to refer to the permanent life-giving relationship disciples have. As we abide in His word we aside and the father and the Holy Spirit. Take full advantage of these blessings. Depend on the Holy Spirit. Deepen your understanding of God's word and truth. Abide in Christ, the anointed one. The one who is our messiah, Lord, and king. Since we're kind of talking around this, let me ask you, have you been baptized by water in the spirit? Do you have the anointing of the Holy Spirit by being baptized? If not, why not now? You can experience in salvation and anointing today. We would love to assist you with that today. Have you embraced the authority of the scriptures over your life. Are you submitting your doctrine and the way you live to the authority of God's work? Well, I have good news because Jesus is the way, the truth, the life. His way is beautiful. [Text on screen] As I mentioned earlier, an anointed one would be a prophet or a king to show that God himself gave them authority to act as his representative. This leads me to a couple final questions. As Jesus as our anointed one, I want to ask yourself personally, do I take Jesus as the Christ, the anointed one, the messiah of God. This questions our modernistic post-truth view of the world. Is Jesus the son of God, the way, truth, and life to the father. Did he die to pay for my sins and rise again after three days. Is Jesus truly the chosen one to save and redeem us? There is no more important question you can answer. A second thing I want you to ask yourself, is Jesus the king? This questions us personally, that individualism and autonomy that we crave. We are having this feel-good religion of our day that says is Jesus really in charge? Is he the king and loved and revered and given primacy and allegiance. Is he truly my master that I'm an apprentice to, calling us to a new way of living in his kingdom? Here's the trick. Of course we want the savior, but we don't always want the Lord. We want the redeemer, but not the king. We want the lamb to lays his life down for us, but we don't always want the lion of Juda. We don't want him to meddle too much and get too involved. Where is our allegiance? It seems that politics can be as much of a fervor as religion these days. What is our prime directive? Do we love Jesus more than our own family and how we wish our life to be. Some opposed Christ, some minimize Christ sadly in the church and maybe you do sometimes. Maybe I don't outright deny him, but there are ways I can diminish him. How can I make Jesus center of my life. In a bio the author says I can't recommend Jesus enough. That's true. You can't recommend Jesus enough. He always delivers more than you think he will because if Jesus is our king who calls us to follow him into the kingdom of God, that teaches us everything about life and how to live it. In the kingdom of Christ we receive a new identity, new way of living. It's been said Jesus is living in you and he's dying to act like himself. We get a new covenant, citizenship, community, mission, a knew hope based on the fact that Jesus, our king, rose from the dead. Can I get an amen? He's beautiful, glorious, awesome. Jesus is everything that matters. Why would we bend the knee to any other leader or system of this world? Why would we love anything or anyone more than king Jesus, our Christ? Well, as Gary makes his way to come up and pray for us today, I want to say I do have some fantastic news for all of us today. It's even better than getting an e-mail from a Nigerian prince. Here it is. Are you ready? The king is risen. Amen. The king is risen, amen. Let's behold our king who is the messiah. Let's make much of Jesus, our Christ and king and may he reign in your life and in mine. >> Thank you, Shane. As we close in prayer, let us go to our king. Father, we thank you so much for being our king. Lord, I don't know where everyone's heart is today. I know at times I will always acknowledge you as my king, but in my attitude and how I feel about things, I try to take it back. So if anyone is here today, that struggle with authority, father, in all areas of our life, fill us with a desire to submit to your authority and realize you are king over everything regardless of our behavior. Father, maybe some here today have not acknowledged or made you king of their life and don't want you. You're king over their hearts and granted them repentance. Give them a desire to follow and observe you with a single gospel message. You reign over our church at First Colony Church and we pray for the unity of our congregation and the wisdom of our leaders. We ask that you protect us from the Satanic attacks that are amongst us. Father, you are king over our country and our country is struggling in so many ways, whether it be the physical ailments of COVID, whether it be the economy, whether it be the politics. Regardless, you're over that and help us to honor that. Lord, you have commissioned us to go out and share the gospel. Please give us an opportunity this week. Put someone in our life that we can share the gospel. Give us the question to ask and the encouragement that we can help others. When they see that light, help us to give them the reason. Lord, we commit to your authority this week. We commit that you rule over our hearts, minds, resources, our time we spend, our attitudes, the way we treat others. Please, please God, reign in our hearts. In Jesus' name, we praise and you acknowledge you as king. >> Grant: Amen. Thank you so much, Gary. Today we have the privilege of witnessing Isaac Pace making Jesus his king this morning. Let's turn our attention to the Baptistry as his father Andy will be baptizing his son. >> I'm Andy Pace and this is my son Isaac. We're used to doing this type of thing in a milk trough. This here is fancy. A little while ago Isaac asked me about baptism and we kind of -- I thought, well, he's almost nine. We had the conversation and I just put it off. He comes asking again and had another conversation. He kept asking. It reminded me of the story that Jesus told about the dude who had a dinner guest in the middle of the night. Go away, go away, go away, knock, knock, knock. When you pray, be persistent and Isaac was because this was in his spirit. So here we are this morning. Something happening to Jesus between the night he died on Friday and the morning he rose on Sunday, he came up from the grave different. He was different Jesus, new Jesus. He had some additional abilities and a different bodies. His disciples didn't recognize him. We call it his resurrection body. When you go, you'll go down old Isaac and when you come up, you'll be new Isaac because the spirit of God will be in you, living and acting through you. The Bible uses the term new creature. So you will be a new creature starting today, which as I think about it is an appropriate term for an 8-year-old boy. Do you believe that Jesus is the son of God? >> Yes. >> Do you believe that he came to live on earth and died so you could have forgiveness of your sins? >> Yes. >> Do you want to turn away from those sins and live a life where you heart and your life has turned towards Jesus? >> Yes. >> Because you said these things and believe these things, I'm now going to baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. [Applause] >> Grant: Praise the Lord. What a beautiful gift we get to be a part of and celebrate with the Pace family. There are so s a ton of ways to stay spiritual fed and connected. Make sure you're aware. Every Sunday at 9:45 we have Bible classes for all ages. If you're with us at 12:30, you can stay on the live stream. Who is ready to get with friends? We have a lot of great connection groups that are starting back up. This is a great time to go online and sign up for connection group for this season. There are some that want to get Bea from big groups and do one-on-one conversations. We have friend speak. We have international neighbors and getting to teach about Jesus. We have a training coming up on the 11th. We would love to have you join us if you're looking to make an impact there. Several other things going on. Guys, we love you and our church will be praying for you. Let's stand to sing one last song to worship our king. "Unstoppable God" >> Richard: Hey, thank you, church for being here today.
