Good morning, everybody online! I hope you guys are doing great. You know, I'm not doing so hot. You know, yesterday somebody complimented my beauty again; and I'm kind of offended by it because, you know, they saw these things in me; but I know that the compliment wasn't true. It couldn't be true because I saw myself in the mirror. Like my legs haven't been shaved in like years, literally, right? My hair was totally disheveled, totally out of place, and I know you can probably see it but I've got this one really dark hair sticking out of my chin. You can see it, too, can't you? And I knew they couldn't have been complimenting me genuinely. And maybe it's not your beauty standards you struggle with like I do, but we have some image of ourself that even if somebody complimented us, if it's not how we see ourselves, we're not going to believe it. It's the same thing with God. God calls us good because of His righteousness and the Presence of His Holy Spirit living in us; yet sometimes we don't see ourselves good in that same way. I want to encourage each other. That's why we gather together to remind ourselves of the truth when we don't believe it. How about we stand together and let's worship our God, Who speaks the truth over us. >> Richard: Yes, God is good! ("All Because of Jesus" playing) >> Richard: Yes! It's all because of Jesus! Amen! Amen! Our God is faithful and our God is good! ("Great Things" playing) >> Richard: Yes, our God only does great things, amen? Church, you may be seated. >> Joel: Hey, good morning, everyone! It is so good to be with you again in this wonderful weather that we're experiencing. So sometimes I like to show you everything I have. So today I have a regular sheet of paper. I have a regular rope. Not a trick rope -- although I did buy it from a magic shop, but it's a regular rope -- and scissors. There you go, the whole I station -- I can sit down. You're probably like, "How will you use those things?" Well, when I think about life, I know that we experience difficult thing and whether you're little, big, or super big, no matter what, you will experience difficult things. Sometimes when you go through difficult things, as a believer those who are in Christ feel like maybe God's not there. Maybe God doesn't love us anymore. Maybe God doesn't care. But the cool thing is we know He does, and Scripture reinforces that. The verse I want to point out today comes to us from Romans 8:38-39. Paul says, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor things present nor things to come nor powers nor height nor depth nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love that is in Christ Jesus.” So I have a sheet of paper here and will fold it like so. I will fold it again like so-so. And then I will pull out my handy dandy rope. And this rope represents God's love. The cool thing is we're connected to His love no matter what we do. Isn't that cool? And then something comes along and we're like, "Now, wait a minute; that is just not cool at all," and it just kind of messes things up. And then we say, "Uh-oh. Are we still connected to God's love?" What do you think? What does Scripture say? Dun-dun-dun-da. Dun-dun-da. (Laughter) I love it! Yes, thank you. I needed that. (Laughter) (Applause) Well, the cool thing is there is no gimmicks about God's love; that it is something that you can count on. That's my prayer for you, whether you're in a valley or whether you're in a mountain peak at this moment in life. Know that God loves you and that NOTHING can separate you from His love. Thank you very much. (Applause) >> Kevin: Thank you, Joel. We're about to take communion with the Tumas. If you didn't grab one, grab one in the back or what you use at home. That's invitation to the table this morning. There's nothing that can keep us from the table outside of us just not accepting invitation. So thank you for leading us. >> Gary: Thank you, Kevin. My name is Gary, and this is my wife Patti. We're honored to lead you in the Lord's Supper. We begin with prayer over the bread, which represents the body of Christ; and the cup, which remembers His blood shed. He poured it out so we might be saved and for the forgiveness of our sins. Father, we praise You and Your Son who led the perfect life on earth. He was our Teacher. He taught us about prayer. He taught us faith, and He showed us how to love. Then He became a sacrifice for all of our sin and died so we can live through Him. He endured the unbelievable pain of crucifixion and then rose from the dead three days later to show us the way to everlasting life. We remember the sacrifice. We remember. We pray this in the Sweet Name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Please partake. >> Patti: I will be reading from 1 John 4:7-10. (Reading) ("Amazing Grace/My Chains are Gone" playing) >> Richard: The Lord has promised good. >> Richard: Thank you, church, for your worship this morning. You may be seated. >> Kevin: We will pray for our offering. Thank you guys so much for all the ways you generously give. I want to tell you one story of one way that giving impacts. There's so many things across the world, but something happened in this building this weekend you may not have known happened. I had a group of high schoolers. About half of our high schoolers, 25 of them came to me, and said, "We want more in our relationship with God." I said, "Okay, let's make it happen." We had a retreat this weekend and slept overnight in the studio -- sorry if your class is in the studio if it wasn't perfectly rearranged. That may have been my fault. We had this amazing experience where we get more out of God than we had before so I just want to say thank you for that. Let's ask God to pray in this blessing for the money that we give. God, thank You so much for blessing us and, Lord, we give back to You. We give back to You out of gratitude and in faith. Lord, we try to give with a cheerful heart. Lord, sometimes that's hard. Sometimes that's easy but pray Your Holy Spirit will work in us to know when and how much to give; that we will be able to see Your kingdom come and Your will be done. I pray everything You give that You give us direction as a church how to use that so we can see people come to know You that don't know you; we see people that need love and encouragement and all the things You offer brought into their lives. Use us in bold and powerful ways. We pray in Jesus' Name. Amen. ¶ >> Why it is that the desire that we find deep in our hearts are so far from the life that we find ourselves living? Why is it that the movies that we love speak far more to us than our daily grind? There was a heart we had as a boy filled with wonder and dreams of battle and adventure, beauty. And somewhere in the process of boy to man, most of us lose heart. Maybe not all our heart, but we lose big chunks of it. And in order to find the life that we are still looking for, we have to go back, and we have to get those lost parts of our heart back. This is a journey and a whole-heartedness. And in the course of this journey, it opens up a WORLD that we have been waiting for. >> In the weeks since I finished the book, my relationship with my wife has gone to another level. She sees me as a different man. >> In this time we're all in different places, we're -- we could be struggling with different things or the same thing. We can just come together and really encourage one another. >> If you want to grow in your faith, there's no better way to do it than getting together with other guys to work it out and grow in the process. >> There's going to be something in here that it's -- it's that finger that's in your chest going, "That's you. This is your issue." He pretty much covers it all. >> I just want to personally invite you to join us on this great journey "Wild at Heart." We deal with a lot of challenges. Come be encouraged, filled with life and God's Word and just recover your masculine heart. Go to the website and register. We look forward to seeing you. >> Kevin: I read this book probably five times and reading through it another time now, it's what they're selling right now. It's really good. Sign up for that if you want to. If you're a kid first through fifth grade, it's time to head to Joel for Main Street Live. Parents, sign them in if you haven't done that yet. You will have a great time back there, worshiping God together. Everybody else, why don't we greet one another and tell them something you're looking forward to this week, okay? ("Sing Wherever I Go" playing) >> Richard: Amen, church! You may be seated. >> Ronnie: Oh, Richard and team, thanks so much. Isn't that a great song? I really like that song, shades of John Denver in that song, you know? (Scattered laughter) All right, everybody, glad to see you. To those in the room, welcome! So glad to have you with us. To those of you watching online, we welcome you as well and encourage you to get your Bible right there, your printed version or digital version, and turn to 1 John 4. We'll get there here in a moment. We're in a message series from the New Testament book of 1 John, written by the Apostle John who wrote five books in if New Testament -- Gospel of John and 1, 2, and 3 John and also wrote the book of Revelation. The theme of the series is "Walking in the Light," and the message today is "A True or False Test." I will begin with a pop quiz, a true or false test. Let's see how you do. Ready? Here we go. True or false: Abraham Lincoln had no middle name. True. No middle name. Broccoli was once banned from the White House. True or false? That's right. George H.W. Bush in 1990. (Laughter) Pretty good move, actually. And the "Star Wars" franchise movies, the voice of Yoda is played by the same person who did the voices of Miss Piggy and Cookie Monster. True or false? That's true. Absolutely true. Performed by a guy named Frank Oz. Aren't you glad you came to church today? (Laughter) Yeah. There you go. All right. There you go. More information coming up. Queen Elizabeth, before becoming queen, her occupation -- she was a mechanic. True or false? True. Absolutely true. Good skill to have when you're a queen as well, you know? (Scattered laughter) Here you go. All of you game players, card players -- all the kings in a standard deck of cards have a mustache. True or false? False. The king of hearts does not have a mustache. There you go. One more: cows sleep standing up. True. That's right. I started to say, some of you are pretty good sleeping, you know, sitting upright. (Laughter) You know, yeah, you're pretty good at that, you know. All of a sudden you have people say, "Hey, Ronnie, did you see --" Oh, yeah, I see everything. (Laughter) Sometimes it's hard to keep from laughing. (Laughter) It is. Sometimes I just want to say, "Hey, everybody, look." Ha-ha! Okay. So here's sort of the thesis for the morning. Let me put it on the screen. Because deception is real, discernment is vital. Because deception is real, discernment is vital. Life is not beige. There are thing that are true and thing that are false. Okay, here we go. We're in a short section of Scripture, 1 John 4:1-6. You get a step back. Last week the Apostle John was speaking about love. Here's what love, Christ is the model for love. Next week we're in another longer section, again, about the reality of Christian love. We love one another in the Lord. But right here he gives a little piece to remind us love is not gullible; that love does not mean that you approve of everything. Love does not mean that you have no discernment. Love doesn't mean that you don't have guardrails in your life. He says, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” Why? Because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This message is repeat throughout the New Testament. In other words, it's a call for Christians to be discerning, to be discriminating, if you will. There's a kind of discrimination that is evil and wrong -- racial discrimination, for example -- but it is important to discriminate, to discern. For example, we don't let pedophiles teach kindergarten -- sorry, you know? If you've had too much to drink, they're not gonna let you get behind the wheel of a car. And if you've been, you know, arrested for those violations, they're not going to put you behind the wheel of a school bus. Sorry. They're discriminating. They're discerning. If you have a round-trip plane ticket but on the outbound leg you choke one of the flight attendants and try to break down the cockpit door -- sorry, they will discriminate and not let you use the second half of your round-trip ticket. We discern. We say, "This is good; this is not good. This is right; this is wrong. This is healthy; this is unhealthy." And in the spiritual world, John says, you have to test because many false prophets have gone out into the world. Don't believe every talk show; don't believe every philosophy; don't believe every blog. You test it. Not everything spiritual, not everything that has a Christian label on it, is from God. Don't be gullible; don't trust it till you test it. So how do you do that? Well, he gives some counsel here. He says in verse 2, "This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God. Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world." He says, you know, you can tell true from false by what they say, what they believe about Jesus Christ. Here John specifically is dealing with some folks who denied the humanity of Jesus, that He came in the flesh. Let me say something in a straightforward here. Jesus really came in flesh and blood. He was tempted in all ways like us but did not sin. He was a perfect sacrifice for our sins -- why? Because He was tempted in all ways but did not sin. That makes Him a worthy high priest, ready to distribute real grace and real mercy to real flesh-and-blood people like you and me. All through the New Testament, the apostles set the Incarnation -- God coming as a man at the center of Christian theology. Now, the big picture is if you would deviate from this clear teaching, what else is up for grabs? If you're off on the essence of Jesus, then what else is up for grabs for you? And again, step back and get the bigger picture. The false teachers, that's what they're saying. What they're doing is they're trying to create disruption. They're trying to create division. They're trying to create new alliances and allegiances. They're saying, "Don't listen to John. Don't listen to the apostolic message. Listen to us." Verse 4. "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, -- the falls teach -- because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." Listen carefully. "They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them." Spiritual teaching will be embraced by spiritual people, and worldly teaching will be embraced by worldly people who are driven by the lust of the flesh, lust of the eye, pride of life. And if you are searching for your truth more than you searching for God's Truth, you will have plenty of people to help you along the way; and if you want to dance around a golden calf, you will be able to find someone to help you out. The world, he says, divide its own kind of message. Verse 6. "But we are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us." Now, that's going to sound a bit pretentious, but hang with me. "We are from God, and whoever knows God listens us to; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of Truth and the spirit of falsehood." Now, John Stott is a fabulous Christian statesman who passed away a few years ago. He said, and I quote, "This would be the height of arrogance if the Apostle John were speaking as an individual. But he's an apostle." He's saying, whoever follows the Lord listens to us, the apostles. We're entrusted with special authority to do what? To lay the foundation of the church through their witness and through their teaching. What did the early church devote themselves to? Prayer, fellowship, breaking of bread; and remember the fourth thing? The apostles' teaching. We have the apostles' teaching recording for us in the New Testament, and it is THE standard by which we evaluate Christian teaching. You should evaluate me by the standard of the New Testament. Without a standard, everything's up for grabs. And my friends, you have world view convictions. You will either have world view convictions on the teachings of Scripture or you will have world view convictions just based on your own viewpoints -- you know, putting together maybe some politics, my tribal group. "This is my posse, the people I listening to," cobbling maybe a little Christianese. Or you will approach the Bible not as just helpful advice as a consultant but as God's Word. I will put that question on the screen for you: "Is the Bible God's Word to you or helpful advice?" Dallas Willard, who taught at the University of Southern California for years -- he taught philosophy, and a lot of people knew he was a strong Christian, a Christian writer. People asked him, "You really believe the Bible?" “Yes.” "Are you serious about following Jesus?" His classic response was, "Who else would you recommend I follow?" One of the greatest gifts you have is your Holy Bible, sacred Scriptures, the voice of God. You know, Jesus says and taught us one of Satan's primary strategies is what? Lying. Lying. Spiritual warfare is basically warfare of ideas. Eve was first tempted in the garden through an idea, through a suggestion. " “Hey, eat this; you'll be like God. And I know he said there would be consequences -- there will be no consequences." That's why Jesus taught, memorized, upheld, exalted, lived by, and underscored the Scriptures. He said you do not live by bread alone but by every Word that comes from the mouth of God." Okay. So there's this little section out of 1 John 4:1-6. The main point being, "Don't be gullible. Pay attention. Test what you hear," and you're perfectly capable of doing that. You have been around the Word of God and grown up around it. A little flashing light will go off if there's something you need to evaluate. Greater is the Holy Spirit that's in you than he that is in the world. Those who have been exposed to apostolic teaching and are rooted in it. There you go. Discernment is vital because deception is out there, and you're perfectly equipped to do that. Before I close, I want to highlight four lies -- we can highlight a lot. I will highlight four lies that you are hearing regularly. Let's just put the lies out here on stage and address them. Here's lie one: your net worth is your real world. That's not true. Some of you in this room are high net worth people, and that's a beautiful thing. Unit it well. Some of you may not be such a high net worth person and that is okay. Your worth is determined first of all, that you're created in the very image of God. There you go. And your worth and your value is enhanced if you're a believer because you are child of God in the temple of the Holy Spirit. And you know, whatever my net worth is, there's coming a day when my net worth will not matter one bit. That matters a little bit now. There's coming a day it will not matter at all, but my friends, we have a treasure, a REAL treasure, not susceptible to any destructive force in this world. That's our relationship & with our Great, Living God. Here's the second message you will hear regularly: Just follow your heart. Follow your heart. Follow your feeling; follow your heart. Shane Pruitt said in one of his writings, "Can you imagine our culture tells us regularly that the ultimate factor in making important decisions is this: what is your heart telling you to do?" Now, it's important we pay attention to emotions and heart and feeling -- I'm not saying you pretend they're not there and discard them. You don't put them in the driver's seat. He said, "How horrifically dangerous is it to follow your heart on important matters? Because your heart can change. Your feelings can change. Your emotions can fluctuate. They can change with one phone call. They can change with one word of criticism at the wrong time. They can change when you're stuck in a traffic jam, and if we follow just truly just follow our feelings, we'll be all over the map." So one lie is just follow your heart. The advice that I would share with you is to follow the Lord. Many of you when you were younger memorized this passage out of Proverbs 3. Remember it? “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart. And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge HIM, and Let make your paths straight.” Here's a third lie you will hear regularly. You ready? Here it is. Historic Christianity is obsolete. Historic Christianity is just obsolete. You hear it all the time. "Oh, fewer people are going to church. Bible-based Christianity is just not going to make it much longer. It's just obsolete. It's outdated, outmoded." There you go. That's false, which is not true. Right now, China is the global center of atheism, but sociologists expect that by 2030 there will be more Christians in China than right now in America; and by 2060 China could be a majority Christian country. What's more, by that time 40% of the world's Christians are expected to be living in sub-Saharan Africa. Now, in the West -- sort of where we are -- religious identification has certainly declined and may decline some more. But listen carefully: but the rest of the world is not following suit. Christianity is STILL the world's largest religion, the most multi-racial, multiethnic, multicultural movement in history. In the next 40 years, Christianity is set to remain the world's largest belief system, claiming 32% of the global population. Meanwhile, that portion of humanity that does not identify with any particular religion including the "nones," N-O-N-E-S, are set to decline from 16% to 13%. And contrary to the message that Christianity, you know, apostolic orthodox, Bible-based Christianity is on its way out, contrary to the message that, "Oh, religion poisons everything." "New York Times” op-ed titled "Evangelicals without the Blowhards," written by Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Nicholas Kristof says, "Go to the front lines or abroad in the battles against hunger, ma Hilliard, rape, human trafficking, genocide, and some of the bravest people you will ever meet are evangelical Christians who truly live their faith." Did you know that weekly church attenders right here in America donate 3.5 times more money to charity than people who do not go to church? They volunteer twice as much and half as likely to engage in domestic violence and less likely to commit at least 43 other crimes. I'm not saying people who go to church walk on water. 1 John said, if we claim we have no sin, we make God to be a liar. We have regular things to confess and grow in. But you do walk in the light and do make a difference. Rebecca McLaughlin, who is a FABULOUS writer -- a Ph. D. from Cambridge University, as well as theology degree. She wrote a book called "Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World's Largest Religion." She said, and I quote, “We've been told that Christianity is declining. It is not. We have assumed Christianity cannot stand up in the academic world. It can. Too many of us think that Christianity's threatened by diversity. It is NEVER been threatened by diversity, the most multinational, multiethnic belief system ever.” Some of you have been told that the Christian ethic is just not sustainable in our world today. That's not true, and we have conceded way too much ground to secularism. And she said we've got to be faithful in this cultural moment. Neither defensive and apologetic but not aggressive, either. It's time to go on the gentle offensive. Give reasons for your faith and believe that there may be someone else who hold to a different belief system than you. She said, “What should you do? Be willing to engage. Be willing to have a discussion. "Well, they have another faith or no faith at all." “Well, let's get back to Christians going on the offensive with the Gospel and seeking to win people to Christ. And give that person” -- she said, “give that person the respect they deserve.” What that means is you look at that person and believe THAT person is an individual, a personal, rational agent who can make up their own mind. They're not just a product of their culture. If you will engage -- not just argue -- but if you will engage and respect and seek to be persuasive for the cause of Christ and not timid. It's what is needed in this day and age. Historic Christianity -- oh, it's just -- it will -- just not true. And even if it is true and you're a part of the world, the Spirit of God is alive and well and can do great things in you. Greater is He that is in you than he in the world. Very quickly, one more. Here's a lie some of you will hear. You ready? "You're all alone." Some of you feel that when you're walking in the shoes of Elijah. You look around you and think, "Hey, any of my friends believe anymore? Anybody in my neighborhood believe? I think I'm the only one who cares." Remember Elijah? "Lord, I think I'm the only one in Israel who's not bowing his knee to Baal. Just take my life. I'm the only one who cares." The Lord opened his eyes and reminded him, “That's just not true, Elijah. There are 7,000 others out there who have not bowed their knee to Baal.” You encouraged to that and be that creative minority making a difference. Some of you feel alone because sort of physically you are and fellowship-wise you are. Maybe during this pandemic it's been easy to pull away, easy to be isolated. And for those of you watching online, let me just remind you of something you saw earlier. Men, I want to challenge you: this week you've got a great opportunity to connect with some other men by way of Zoom. It's a 6:00 a.m. study. It is. By the way, I was in a 6:00 a.m. Zoom study a few month ago, and there was a couple in there. They signed up for it; they were jazzed; they were ready to go; and the day before, Missy Edgmon sent an e-mail to remind us. They thought it was a 6:00 p.m. Wednesday Zoom study. But you know, 6:00 a.m., they were there. You're never so alone as when you try to deal with your own sin alone. You're never so alone as when you try to deal with your own struggles alone. You're never so alone when you try to walk through a valley on -- we are wired to be together in some way. We're just not designed for solo flying. Some of you, you're gonna hear the lie. "You're all alone." Joel alluded to it earlier. You're going through a really difficult time. And you -- had it been your call, you would say, "God, why didn't You just take me around the storm instead of taking me right through it?" May I remind you on your best days God is with you. On your worst days, God is with you. He will never leave you. He will NEVER forsake you. He cares for you, and you will not walk through that valley alone. Ah. "Your net worth is your real worth." Not true. "Historic, apostolic, orthodox Christianity; that's on its way out." NOT TRUE. Not true. "Just follow your heart." Let it have a seat at the table. But trust in the Lord, follow His Word. And "Oh, you're all alone." No, you're not. The Lord is with you. The church quantities to encourage you and the Holy Spirit is within you. So here's John's message: don't be naive to the reality of wolves in sheep's clothing. Discernment is that ability to think Biblically and in a world of deception is a vital skill. Dee, would you make your way up, please? Dee Attleberry will lead us in prayer. Let me ask you online and in the room, what's your next step to make? Has the Holy Spirit pointed a finger today and said, "Here's an area that needs a wake-up call. Here's an area that needs a point of revival and resuscitation”? I know every time I read the Word of God -- you know, often it's like, "Okay. Here's something that maybe I need to be paying closer attention to. Whenever we gather as a body, the Holy Spirit is doing His work within us." The Lord bless you. May the Lord keep you and give you His peace. To those of you who may not yet be a Christian, know that we stand ready and eager to help, help you learn; help you take those first steps of faith; baptize you in Christ; and then nurture you along your spiritual journey. All right, Dee. Come lead us in prayers, please. >> Dee: What a great and motivating and challenging sermon. Sounds like to me I need to get off the sideline off the bench and get in the game. Get back in that game. Shall we pray together? Our Father God in heaven and Jesus Christ our Savior, we're gathered here as Your children, unified, Lord, through Your Son Jesus Christ, His Spirit and His blood. We just pray, Lord, that as we walk in the world that we will be confident and bold and used in a spirit of love and light, Lord, to share the kingdom of Jesus Christ to others, Lord. As we do it, Lord, we pray that we'll do it with truth; and, Lord, we might be bold and confident in what we say and do. We have that light; Lord, that needs to shine. Lord, we pray that it will set us on fire, Lord, set us on fire for the kingdom of heaven. Lord, let us be bold and let us bring those with us. We pray as we go out into the world that we'll learn to love people like You love us. Lord, with everything that we have, we love You with all our heart and our mind and soul. We pray that You will motivate us, Lord, and to do Your work in this world. In Christ's Name we pray, amen. >> Kevin: Amen. So there's a couple of things I want to tell you about. If you're just now coming back and don't know about it, we have classes that are starting at 9:45 before this service. If you don't know where they are, go to "New Here? Start Here." They will take you where they are so you don't have to worry about where it will be. There's a lot of good ones. Also if you're online and want to join us, there's an online class Kyle teaches at 12:30; so log in for that, real great content. Also the Huddle, as Ronnie mentioned, is great. Don't forget to sign up for that. As you look by the right, there's tables with baby bottles. This is our Baby Bottle Boomerang to support women in the middle of making a decision about what to do with their pregnancy. We want to support them in a way that is able to help them out so you can put your coins in there, collect them from all over your house. You can ask your neighbor and say "Give me all your money for a good cause." They won't say no, right? You can keep filling it up and will keep giving money for that. On Wednesday night, we have classes that are starting up all over the building for all ages. So we want you to know you're invited for that. Let's stand up to sing one more song together. >> Richard: All right, church! ("Sing Wherever I Go" playing) >> Richard: Thank you, church, for worshiping with us today! You are dismissed!
