Merry Christmas to all of you. It's so good to be together on this Christmas Eve. We are here to celebrate Jesus, who is still the light of the world. (MUSIC) >> Church, let's all stand together. (HYMN) (MUSIC) >> Joy to the world. We celebrate continue the coming of the Lord Jesus. We want to do Christmas Carols. We are just going to sing these together as a church family. (MUSIC). >> Thank you for singing with us tonight, church. You may be seated. >> Good afternoon everyone. It is so good to be with you this Christmas Eve. We love children and we love those that are young in years, but we also love those who are young at heart. Today we have an object lesson that's for the children and me and anyone else who likes childish things. We're going to talk about the candy cane. The legend goes there was a candy cane maker who wanted to impart Jesus Christ who his granddaughter. As he was thinking about different thing to do special for his granddaughter, he began to narrow it down. I'm narrowing it down as well. First of all, I have some gum. Now if you've ever had this kind of gum, it um, it's kind of squiggly. And kind of dangles like a tongue. It's rather tasty. It's HubbaBubba by the way. When you're making candy, you have a choice. You can make it squiggly or straight. And this candy maker thought "you know what I want to make it straight." Did you know there's a verse in Isaiah that says that he will make the path straight. And then you have colors. There is a spectrum of colors out there. And what color would you choose to make your candy cane? Well we all know in Isaiah 1:18, though you're sins were as scarlet, he will make them white as snow. Pretty cool. And then the question is would you make it solid or soft? Would you want your candy that represents Jesus Christ to be soft like a gummy bear? Or would you want it to be solid? And when you think about verses that talk about Jesus Christ, he's not a softy. In psalms 18:2, he says the Lord is my rock and salvation. What color? A solid color? Like snickers? Or striped? Do you know what verse is coming next? Isaiah 53:5, by his stripes we are healed. And my last candy is something that's rather sour. Would you make your candy sweet? Or would you make it sour, if it's pointing back to Jesus Christ? And we know that in Psalm 19:10, it says the word is sweeter the honey. The interesting thing is that we know that Jesus is the word that became flesh. If you haven't seen a candy cane and you're wondering about it, I happen to have an example right here inside my little bag. As you can see, we have a straight staff, we have a solid staff. We have scarlet, white, stripes and just like Jesus is our shepherd, He will lead us to God. Thank you very much. >> Thank you, Joel. What else do you have in the bag of tricks? >> One thing I forgot to mention is that this message is to be internalized, so when you leave, you will be given a candy cane. That's what I forgot. Thank you. >> All right. We're so delighted by your presence for spending Christmas Eve with us this year. Every Christmas Eve service we collect an offering that directly goes to affect the residents of the county. 100% of everything that's given in this candlelight service and the one following will go to bless the residents of our county. You can give online, you know how that operates, you can see the information on the screen if it's there. If not you can find a staff member or a team in the lobby. Or you can give a physical offering in one of the giving boxes at all the exits. We are going to pray together. Thank you, Jesus, for this moment, thank you God for sending you Son, to be like us. To experience our joys and our pains, our anxiety, our frustrations, our celebrations and disappointments. We see in you, who we want to be, who we can be, by the power of your Holy Spirit. We believe that, that the spirit that raised you from the dead is the spirit that's in us. Your word tells us that. We pray that the spirit moves us in this moment to give and bless the lives of people in this county. We have been given so much and blessed tremendously. I pray, Lord, that all of these offerings will do miraculous things and that you prepare the people to receive those, even right now. Thank you for this service and for our worship together, we pray this in Jesus name, Amen. >> In those days, a decree went out from Cesar Augustus, that all the world be registered. This was the first registration when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the Town of Nazareth to Judea, to the City of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David. To be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn Son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region, there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shun around them. And they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them "Fear not, for behold I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David, a savior who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you. You will find a baby wrapped swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly, there was within the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace among those with whom He is pleased." >> Why don't we all stand together. >> Thanks, team. Don't sit down just yet. We are about to have our fellowship greeting. If you didn't get a candle make sure to get one here in the next couple of moments. If you're a guest and joinings us for the first time, there's a QR code in front of you. You can scan and someone from the church will contact you. Don't forget to take a visit to new here, start here. Merry Christmas. Tell everybody Merry Christmas, all right? Enjoy our fellowship greeting. (MUSIC) >> Thank you church, you may be seated. >> Thank you Richard and team. Thank you very, very much for leading us so well. And good evening, everyone. Merry Christmas. We welcome family, friends, guests, as part of our Christmas Eve celebration here at the First Colony Church of Christ. To those of you in the room, so glad to have you with us. And to those of you worshipping with us via livestream, we're so glad that you're joining us as well. I didn't see too many Christmas sweaters on the way in, with 82 degree temperatures. Personally, I love the weather. But we're glad that you're here. A lot of you at home, you have a nativity scene. How many of you have a nativity scene you have at home? Martha and I, we do. We have a hand-crafted nativity scene from Bethlehem. Hand-crafted nativity scene, from Bethlehem that you can only get in Bethlehem. Or at the Katy Mills Mall. I've been the Bethlehem several times, and we have a hand-crafted, nativity scene from Bethlehem. I was there, you know, 3-4 years ago. We are in Bethlehem, at the place where you can buy hand crafted nativity scenes. And I'm chatting with one of the owners. And he says, where you are from? I said, Houston, Texas. He says, "I lived in Katy for a couple of years." "Why were you in Katy?" "We have a store in the Katy Mills Mall." "You're telling me all of these I could have purchased at the mall?" "Absolutely." So in case you want hand crafted nativity scene, you can go to Bethlehem or go 20 minutes to the mall. Nativity scenes, they -- they are just wonderful to see. Um, you negotiation some of you have seen um, live nativity scenes you know, people will put on a live nativity scene. Dog lovers have put on nativity scenes. Right? There's even modern Hipster nativity scenes, with the cool traveling wise men, Joseph taking a selfie, right there. What those nativity scenes we mind us of is that Jesus Christ the son of God has broken into the human story, and by faith we are never the same. Advent, the Christmas season, appearing or coming. And we look back to the first coming of Jesus and look forward to his second coming and get in touch with the reality of what it means to live in between that first coming and the second coming. It's a mixture of joy and sorrow. Life and death. Over coming and at times under achieving. But we give thanks for what God has done, what he has started, even as we wait and watch for Jesus to return and finish what he has started. And so we live in the tension of the in between. I ask you to draw the attention of your heart to Jesus Christ. Now, um, we have some candles up here. And every year I try to light a memory candle. This is in honor of our loved ones who are no longer with us. But their legacy lives on. We're still influenced and impacted by them. There's something about the Christmas season, it can make a high even higher. It can make a low even lower. But every Christmas season, you're thinking about people, you can see their face, see their smile, hear their laughter and we remember them. Let's just take a moment of silence, as we remember those whom we miss so much. Let's pray. Lord we thank you for our loved ones, what they added to our lives. And um, we remember them. We miss them. And Lord, would you be the comforter of our hearts. And we pray for those who need healing, in your power. This we pray in Christ's name, Amen. . And now we move into the lighting of the Christmas candle. The Christ candle. But you see these 4 candles lit around the center candle, the Christ candle, these 4 gifts represent not to be missed, gifts from Jesus. Hope, love, joy, peace, peace beyond human understanding. Joy that is not tied to circumstances. Hope for a future heavenly home, Christ says he's preparing just for us. And love, there's no greater love than His love, it's a kind of love that seeks the wellbeing even of his enemies without looking for anything in return. Here is what I ask you to do. Embrace from Christ these gifts, hope, love, joy and peace. Receive these gifts, cultivate these gifts, distribute these gifts. We love the Lord Jesus, here. And my friends, his church, throughout the world, it's alive and it is well. And on this Christmas Eve, we celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus the good shepherd, Jesus who forgives our sins. Jesus who is coming again. Jesus, the son of Virgin Mary, the only son of God. I light this candle in honor of not just king Jesus, but king of kings and Lord of Lords. And because of him we will never ever be the same again. Isaiah Chapter 9. >> Not yours, not mine, no one in Austin, no one in DC, no one on earth. The actual ruling is on his shoulders. Jesus says, recording? John 12, I have come into the world as a light. >> And the scriptures, light is a metaphor for illumination. Think after the feeling you have sometimes you get up in the middle of the night and you're fumbling around in the dark. That's what it's like to live without the knowledge of Jesus Christ. You have so many questions. You're looking for meaning and purpose and you ask "who am I? Why am I here? What does it really mean to be a human? What's the purpose of life? What does it mean to be good? How can I become a better person? Is there anyone out there who really loves me?" "Is there hope even for my future?" And without Jesus Christ, you're grasping and fumbling in the dark. Trying to make sense of the mystery and suffering and the goodness and the joys and the ups and downs of life. My friends, there's much we do not know. And I don't have an answer for everything, but here's what I do know. Christ is come, he died for our sins. He is risen, he will come again, the kingdom of God is here, we are living in it now and the best part of God's plan for you is yet to come. And so at Christmas, we get in touch with hope, love, joy and peace brought to us by Christ Jesus. Now everybody, get out your candles. We're going to light these candles, we're going to shed the light of Christ and again, just a little practical coaching. You never want to tilt a lighted candle. Don't tilt a lit candle. If you're candle is lit, keep it vertical. If you've got children near you, be careful. Let's make this a really, really good, positive experience, okay? Um, and so what I'm going to do is I'm going to light my handle from the light of Christ. Years ago, I received Jesus Christ as Lord and savior. This is my wife Martha. Two of our 6 grandchildren, here. 11-year-old James, 9-year-old Jude. And they are going to help us pass the light of Christ around. And for some of you who are near the front, why don't you just be making your way up here, we are going to be single Silent Night and everyone, let's pass the light of Christ around. >> Would you just hold up your candle, hold up your light. Look around, look at that. A moment ago it was so dark. One life touched the light of Christ and notice the impact, the influence. Notice how to light has spread. It's beautiful. Here's what we're going to do. We're going to make a declaration. Jesus says that he's the light of the world. He brings illumination, healing, growth, he brings vision. He brings salvation. So we're going to look up and we're going to declare to Jesus, we're going to say back to him "you are the light of the world." You ready? One, two, three. You are the light of the world. Now we're going to do it again, but this time I'm going to change it up just a little bit. I want you to make this personal declaration. I want you to lift up your light and for you to say "you are the light of my world." You ready? One, two, three. You are the light of my world. My friends, let's continue to sing, Silent Night. . >> You know, Jesus also says that you're the light of the world. Matthew 5, he says you also are the light of the world, so you let your light shine before others. That they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. You are God's strategic plan for taking the light of his home, joy, peace into dark corners and dark places. God bless you, everyone. Why don't you go ahead, blow out your candle. And let's pray together, please. Father God, we thank you for Jesus the light of the world. It's dark without you. All of us know what that feels like. We need hope, and you are the light at the end of whatever tunnel we are in. Your goodness, your readiness to restore, your forgiveness, your sustaining grace, whatever we need we can count on you to never leave us or fore sake us. Our Father, holy is your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins even as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for yours is the kingdom, power and glory, forever and every. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen. Thank you for being with us. Martha and I, and our staff, we wish you all a happy Christmas and joyful new year. May the love, joy, hope and peace of our great God go with you. All right, everyone. Let's be standing and we want to sing one more Christmas song. And let's make some serious Christmas noise. (MUSIC). >> Thank you, church, for coming tonight. You have a Merry Christmas. You are dismissed. >> Thank you for joining us today. We want to let you know about a few items of interest. First go to our website, First Colony church dot org and go there often. You'll find links and our podcast. You can also download our church app, just search for First Colony Church of Christ in the app store or on Google Play, the app is a great resource where you can stay connected to First Colony Church. Thank you for joining us today. We are glad you're here. (END OF SERVICE) (BEGINNING OF SERVICE) >> The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. >> Well, Merry Christmas. Welcome to the candlelight service at the First Colony Church of Christ. It is such a pleasure to be together and to celebrate Jesus who is still the light of the world. (MUSIC) >> Well, church, let's all stand together and sing tonight. (MUSIC) >> Joy to the world, the Lord has come. Church, tonight, we are just going to sing some more Christmas Carols, just as a church family. Let's all sing together. >> You may be seated. >> Well, good evening, everyone. It is so good to be with you all, this Christmas Eve. You know, Jesus loves children and here at First Colony, we love children as well. We are happy you're here as a family. This is a special children's message. I want kids to see, smell, taste, to feel the message of Christmas. All right. As my feedback builds. . . There we go. I guess I need to move it up. Tada. That was impressive. That was the "feel" part. Now comes the taste and see. We are talking about the candy cane. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the legend there was a candy cane maker, and he wanted his granddaughter to know Jesus. And he thought about what went inside the invention of the candy cane. I think about that and I would say, okay, so in the world of candy, you have squishy candy and you have solid candy. And if I were a candy cane maker, is Jesus on the squishy side or solid side? I would say he's on the solid side. Others have invented candy and these are gummies and these are soft. But the verse I think the candy cane maker thought of was psalms. The Lord is my rock. That is solid. Now it doesn't just stop there. So you have a solid piece of candy. Then the question is, um, does it like swirl in circles? Is it twisted? How does it go? So here I have -- is it going to be straight or is it going to be squiggly? Here I have HubbaBubba bubble gum. He is make our path straight, there is a straight way to the Lord. And then we have, would you go with something that's sweet? Or would you go with something that's sour? Is the Lord sour or sweet? I think we would go with something that's sweet. When you think about a verse that touches on sweetness, I think of psalms 19:10, and it talks about how God's word is sweet like honeycomb and we know that the word became flesh and dwell among it for a while. Then we have colors. What color would you pick? Or to keep it in the Ss, of the spectrum, would you pick? Well this is the rainbow, this is skittles, they are all over the someplace. If you were thinking about a color and you know that a candy cane is scarlet and white. Isaiah 1:18. Now, the last one I have in here is a snickers. And it's one solid color. Would you go for one solid color or look for a way to mix it up and make a message? And we know that, um, he did go with multiple colors and he included stripes on there as well, Isaiah 53:5, by his stripes we are healed. If I was to hold up this candy and this one is broken. At the end you're going to get a candy cane and if you're fortunate, you're going to get broke, because we know Jesus's was broken for us. What's cooler is when you bring it up like this, you can truly see the straight, the colors, scarlet and white, the stripes and the fact it's not squiggly and it's solid and it does give us a message. Hopefully, when you consume your candy cane, you will be pointed to Jesus Christ and you will taste him this Christmas. Thank you very much. >> Thank you, Joel. We want to extend to you an opportunity this Christmas Eve to worship through your giving. We are going to take a Christmas Eve collection. You have our assurances that 100% of everything given in our Christmas Eve service will go to directly bless and affect those who live in our county. You can give online, the instructions will be on the screen. But there are also giving boxes at our exits, you can give physically. Again, you have our assurance that 100% of everything given in our Christmas Eve offering will go to bless the people here in the county. Let's pray over this offering together. Thank you, Lord, for this very special time of the year, for this special moment, for gathering us together in a Christmas Eve service, to experience the joy of the season and the joy of your arrival as a human. Thank you for enduring and experiencing all the emotions that we've felt and will ever feel. We want to pray over our offering at this time. We pray that you, you bless us, that you empower us to give, to give even more, to bless those here who live around us. We also pray that you bless those who will receive the benefits of this offering. You prepare them for that reception at this very moment. Thank you, Lord, we praise you and we are so thankful for your coming. And we pray this in Jesus name, Amen. And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace among those with whom He is pleased." >> Let's all stand together and sing this next song together. (MUSIC) >> That was so, so good to sing that with you. We're about to have our fellowship greeting, so don't sit down. But there are two quick things. This is a candlelight service so if you haven't gotten one, raise your hand and an usher will bring you one. Number two, there's a QR code in front of you, if there's way we can help you, scan your code and you'll be prompted to fill out a few things. It's so good to be here. Tell somebody "Merry Christmas". (MUSIC) >> You may be seated. Richard and team, thank you for leading us so well. Thank you so much. Good evening, everyone. Merry Christmas. And welcome to this 5 p.m. Christmas Eve service. We say welcome to family, friends and guests. Glad to have you as part of this Christmas Eve celebration and to those of you who are worshipping with us online, Merry Christmas to you as well. Glad you're joining us. As I was in the lobby before this service I did not see, and before the 3 p.m. service, I didn't see too many Christmas sweaters this afternoon. And um, with 82 degrees, I guess not. But personally, I love this kind of Christmas weather. And um, I don't know if you have a nativity scene at your house, a lot of people do. If you set up a nativity scene, raise your hand. Martha and I do, we have a nativity scene, it's hand-carved, hand-crafted from Bethlehem. I mean, real Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. Hand-carved, hand-crafted, by artisans from Bethlehem. You can only get that nativity scene in Bethlehem, or at the Katy Mills Mall. In 2017, I'm in Bethlehem standing outside a shop talking to one of the owners. And he says, where are you from? "Sugar land Texas, Houston." "I'm familiar with that area. I lived in Katy." "Really? Why Katy?" "We have a store there, a site at the Katy Mills Mall." "You mean to tell me all this stuff we could have bought in Katy?" "Sure, hand-crafted nativity scenes." You can only get them in Bethlehem or Katy Mills Mall. Nativity scenes they inspire us. Sometimes you see a live nativity scene like this photo. A lot of places do live nativity scenes. Dog loves will even put on a K9 nativity scene. Maybe you've seen the modern hipster nativity scene, with the cool traveling wise men and notice Joseph taking a selfie. The nativity scenes remind us that God has come near, that Jesus has broken into our world and changed us forever and for the better. During the Christmas season, we celebrate advent, appearing or coming. And at advent we look back, we look back to the first coming of Jesus and look forward in anticipation to the second coming of Jesus. And we also get in touch with the in between. In between the first coming and in between the second coming, we get in touch with the here and now, which is a mixture of much joy, and sorrow. There's over coming and under achieving. We give thanks for what God has done in Jesus and we give thanks as we wait and watch for Jesus to return and finish what he started. We live now in this in between. I invite you to draw your heart closer to Jesus Christ. Now, let me step over here for a moment and light this candle. This is our memory candle. And I light that candle in honor of those whom we love so much and miss so much. Everybody he's has tasted grief. During the Christmas season it sensitizes our emotions. The highs can feel a little higher. Sometimes the lows can feel a little lower. But you feel things a little more keenly. And um, there are certain people, you used to celebrate people with. And they are no longer here. You can still see their face, hear their laughter, see their smile, and we miss them. I think it's appropriate to take just a moment of silence to honor those whom we love and miss so much. Lord God we thank you for our loved ones and what they added to our lives, they added much. Would you be the comforter of our hearts and we raise you, Lord Jesus for indeed you were the resurrection and life and it is in your name that we pray, amen. You'll notice right over here, advent candles. The center candle represents Christ. But the outer 4 represent, they represent 4 vital gifts, only Jesus can give. Only Jesus can provide real hope, real joy, peace and love. These are soul gifts. You can't buy these, even if you go to Bethlehem, you can't buy these. But they are gifts to your soul. When you know Jesus Christ is Lord and savior. You'll have a peace beyond understanding, a joy that's not tied to circumstances. You'll have a hope for your future, a heavily home prepared just for you. And you'll know a love that surpasses all. I invite you to receive a fresh these gift of hope, love, joy and piece. Receive them, cultivate them, nurture them and distribute these gifts as well. Tonight we are also going to light the 5th candle. This is the Christ candle. We celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ. The good shepherd, Jesus who forgives our sins, Jesus who will come again, the son of Virgin Mary, the son of God. Isaiah 9. 2 Corinthians 4. Light in scripture, it's a metaphor for illumination, showing the way. You know what it's like to get up in the middle of the night and fumble around. That's what life is like without a knowledge of Jesus Christ. We all ask questions like these. Who am I? Why am I here? What's my purpose in life? What is goodness? What does it mean to be a good person? How can I become a better person? Is there anyone out there that loves me, that knows me and really loves me? Is there hope for my future? Without Jesus Christ, I submit, we are fumbling and grasping in the dark. There's much we don't know. There's much I don't know. But here is what I do know. Christ has come, he died for our sins. He's risen. And Christ will come again. The kingdom of God is near, we are living in it now. And the best part of God's kingdom, the best part of Christ's plan for you, my friends, is yet to come. It's yet in your future. All right. As we get ready to enjoy our candle lighting, everybody get your candle. And you should um, have the candle, as well as a clear plastic cup. And um, just a few coaching pointers, once your candle is lit, don't tilt it. Don't tilt the lit candle. Okay? And um, you can tilt the candle that's not lit. And um, we want this to be a -- if you have children around, we want this to be a wonderful experience, happy experience for everyone. Okay? Now. Helping me tonight I've got my wife Martha and 3 of our 6 grandchildren, 14-year-old Jackson, 12-year-old Ben and almost 10-year-old Ruby and they are really good help. A few years ago, the light of Christ came into my life. And um, I've been able to pass it along over time. And the light of Christ has come into your life. And you'll be able to pass it along as well. So here in just a moment, we're going to be singing Silent Night together. Now I'm going to ask some of our ushers, some of you down front to come around the stage here, and let's begin to pass along the light of Christ to one another. >> All right everyone. Look around. Hold up the light of Christ, would you? Look around, see this. Here's the light of Christ. Jesus said, he said I'm the light of the world. And I want us to say that right back to him. Let's make that worship declaration on the count of 3. This is what we're going to do. We're going to lift up the light of Christ and we are going to shout heaven-ward, you are the light of the world. One, two, three. You are the light of the world. Now we're going to do it again, this time I want you to change the wording just a little bit. I want you to personalize it. Shout to the Lord "you are the light of my world." You ready? One, two, three. You are the light of my world. Let's continue to sing, please. >> You know Jesus one time he said of you and me -- you. Talking about you. Talking about me. You are the light of the world, so you let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven. You are the instrument that God uses to show the way and bring light and illumination into dark places. You take the hope, love, joy and peace of Christ into the world. Let's pray. Father God we thank you for Jesus the light of the world. It's dark without you. All of us here, we know what that feels like. We need hope and you are the light of whatever tunnel we are in. Your goodness, your readiness to restore, your forgiveness, your sustaining grace, whatever we need we can count on you to never leave us or fore sake us. Our father, who art in heaven, holy is your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is on heaven. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen. All right everyone, mission accomplished. Go ahead and blow out your candles. We do recycle these, if you want to drop them off in the lobby on the way out, that's fine. Feel free to take it home and enjoy. Everyone, I hope you come and worship with us some Sunday. We have service at 10 a.m. and you are welcome. From Martha and me, from our family, all of us, from our elders here in our church, our deacons, or wonderful church staff, we wish for you all a very happy Christmas and joyful new year. Thank you everyone for coming out this Christmas Eve. Thank you for joining us online. Okay, now we're going to finish with one more Christmas song. Let's make some joyful noise unto the Lord.
