("Great Things" playing) >> Richard: Yes, somebody give God a praise! (Applause) our God who only does great things! Roped in majesty. ("Raise a Hallelujah" playing) >> Richard: Yes, church, give God praise! Give Hymn a hallelujah as our leaders come forward to celebrate communion. >> Good morning. We are thankful to lead you in the Lord's Supper today. Please pray with me over the bread, representing the body of Christ given for us; and the cup representing the blood He poured out for the forgiveness of our sins. Dear Lord, our light and our salvation; we remember that Christ initiated the practice of communion knowing he would soon be betrayed and taken from those He loved, knowing they would be tested. He wanted them and us to remember that His sacrifice of body and blood had purpose. It was required for our good, for our salvation; so we can live as children of light. Thank You for the blessing and joy of being able to share communion together. Help us to walk in the light of Your Presence at all times. In the Name of Jesus we pray, amen. Let us partake together. >> Lynn: I will be reading from 2 Peter 1:16-19. (reading) >> Richard: Why don't we all stand together in worship? ("What a Beautiful Name" playing) >> Richard: Thank you, church. You may be seated. >> Grant: We're about to collect our offering; but before we do, let me just let you know that giving online is safe, secure, easy to set up. It's how we give every month. If you're here with us, there are giving bins at all the exits. You can drop in your tithes and offerings there. Church, let me just say thank you for giving. It is one of the most beautiful pictures of the body of Christ as we come, we give the blessings that the Lord has blessed us with; and we see the impact in this church and our community and mission points around the world so thank you. Let's pray over the offering today. Father, You Are good. And Your love endures forever; and we want to be here at the First Colony Church of Christ good stewards of what You have provided for us. Father, we want to be people of great faith as we go forward and give. Father, we want to experience the blessing of giving today, the goodness that comes from You and You alone. So father, we walk with You humbly and put our faith and trust in You and pray this in the Powerful Name of Jesus. Amen. >> Joel: Amen! Good morning, everyone. It is so good to see you all here today. So I have a tiny little toilet paper roll, and this is probably my -- well, it's not my tiniest object lesson but this one goes big, all right? That's all I will say. Now, for those of you that enjoy YouTube and different online things, one of the trends is to do trick shots, try to have something amazing happen and catch it on video and get millions of people to subscribe. So the challenge of this toilet paper roll is to see if I can drop it, and I actually have a measurement of my fist to see if I can drop it and get it to stand, all right? Hmm. And what is amazing is that if you hold it as high as your hand, it's nearly impossible to get it to stand, all right? So what, Joel? I'm not impressed yet. All right, well, I have a Bible verse. That's the point, all right? The Bible verse is from 1 Peter 5:6. "Therefore, humbling yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time." The key phrase is "In due time." So when you see something straighten up like that, do you think of something that is proud? I do. When you see something that is bent over like that in a more humble posture, do you think of something that's humble? Now, this is the intriguing thing and I'm giving myself seven chances because the righteous fall seven times and they still rise up. (Laughter) So here we go. I'm dropping it in a humble fashion. Don't hit my hand. That's three. Four. (Applause) boom! Now, this is why it's so cool. A, you can do it at home. You can actually do that. The thing is it makes no sense. Why would dropping something sideways have it bounce up? It makes no sense at all. But that's God's kingdom. It doesn't make sense to our mind. We're seeing the disciples who started with Jesus and they're like, "You know, we're going to overthrow Rome; we will be kings; I don't know who will sit closer to Jesus. This is going to be awesome." And it totally fell apart from the way they thought it should go. And yet God built His kingdom through humble disciples; and as you see in the Book of Acts, they take a totally different perspective and change the world. Do you want to change the world? It starts with humility. Thank you very much. (Applause) >> This is my church. I volunteer on Sunday morning. ♫ >> At our church, services on Sunday mornings don't just happen. There are faithful and dedicated volunteers that assemble each and every week so that we can have our Sunday morning experience at First Colony Church of Christ. >> This is my church; I sing on Sunday morning. >> This is my church, and I run lyrics on Sunday mornings. >> I run lights on Sunday morning. >> I run switcher on Sunday mornings because this is my church. >> I run camera Sunday morning. >> I play keys because this is my church. >> I run camera on Sunday morning because this is my church. >> This is my church so I play guitar. >> So I play bass. >> At our church, we are singers; camera operators; we run lyrics; we play drums; bass; and guitar; we greet; and we serve. >> This is my church. >> This is my church. >> This is my church. >> This is my church. >> This is my church. >> This is my church. >> This is my church. >> This is my church. >> This is my church, and that's why I serve on Sunday mornings. >> This is OUR church, and it takes ALL of us! Sign up to volunteer for our church today. >> Grant: This is our church. Most who's proud to call this your church home? (cheers and applause) this is a great place to be, right? I tell you what, it's amazing. There are hundred of volunteers that serve here every Sunday on a normal week that make this go. I mean, it is the simple things, but there are great ways to get involved. If you're looking to serve on a Sunday morning, you can go to the Info Center. TONS of great volunteers. But Hey, for all these people leading worship behind the scenes, let's give them a big thanks. Thank you, guys. (Applause) thank you, guy, for all you do, every week. It's awesome. If you want to serve in more of a behind-the-scenes role, maybe working cameras or lights or computers, sound booth, I want you to see Brian in the back. Wave your hand. Head back to the south sound booth after service because they would love to meet and know you and teach you to do stuff. Great opportunities to serve every Sunday at the church. Well, there's also great opportunities to serve out in the community and let me let you know movie "Under the Moon is back and we're glad to be in Sugarland Town Square the second Saturday of every month. We're showing a family friendly movie. Young families, come out there and enjoy a movie. We also need volunteers out there. It's a really fun event. We're popping popcorn; we're hang out cookies and waters; lots of free stuff; Bibles; brochures; handing free invitations to join us on a Sunday morning. So this is a fun event, a great way to serve, and happens the second Saturday of every month. You know exactly when it's coming. Put that on the calendar and come join us. But also put this on the calendar and make sure next Sunday you're bringing a big bag of clothes. One of the things we want to do is be a blessing to those in need right here in our community. We're partnering with Second Mile Mission. Gather for gently used clothe and shoes for adults and kids, bring those in a good, sturdy sack. You are gonna find a big Second Mile truck on the front porch from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. so if you're online with us, you can drive up here and drop it off. If you're here, just as you're coming in, bring that bag. Fill up that bag this week and put by your back door. Make sure you don't forget it. All right. Mr. Joel Smith is back center right here. If you're in first to fifth grade are it is time to head back for our Main Street Live! Kids worship service. First to fifth grade. Parents, if you haven't signed up your kids, head to the chapel to get them signed up for Main Street Live! We would love to get to meet you. We've got a new room called "New Here? Start Here" across, lobby and would love to get to answer questions. We have a gift for you and get to meet you here this morning. All right, for all of us, it's time for our fellowship greeting so let's stand. It's the last day of the Rodeo. George strait is playing tonight so give your friends your best howdy y'all here. If you're online, howdy, y'all. ("Lay Me Down" playing) >> Richard: Church, thank you for worshiping with us today. You may be seated. >> Ronnie: Fantastic! Thank you so much, Richard and team. Good morning, everyone. So good to see you here in the room today, here at the First Colony Church of Christ; and to those of you who are worshiping with us online, we welcome you to this worship experience as well. I do have a couple of new member, I'd like to recognize this morning. Would you please stand, Jerry and MaryAnn LaVoie? There they are. (Applause) we want to welcome them into our church family. Fantastic people. Thank you so very, very much. And we are in a message series in the New Testament book of Acts as we look at Spirit, mission, and drama. You will see all three of those playing out today in our message called "A Tale of Two Gifts." Everybody, alm of us, we've all played pretend certainly when we were growing up. We pretended to be Wonder Woman or Superman or Batman. You pretenned to be a teacher or a fireman or a pilot. Some of us even played church. Even as adults, we can play pretend. We can pretend to be smarter or happier or kinder or cleaner than we really are. Sometimes we even see 60-year-olds pretending to be 20-year-olds. Have you ever been in a situation where you had something to do at the house and your spouse ask you to do something or roommate or parent and they will be back in just a bit? You think you will check the score of the game to see what is going on and all of a sudden you get a little sidetracked, flipped over. Oh, one of your favorite movies is on. Then you get caught up in it and a little while later -- uh-oh, a car pulls in the driveway. You turn off the TV and you act like, "Uh-oh," you get busy and pretend "I have been at this over the last hour." You ever done anything like that? Yeah, you have; I can tell from the way you're smirking you have done something like that. Sometimes pretending is just fun. It is. A couple weeks ago Martha and I went to a murder mystery dinner where J.C. and Deb Playingr hosted it. We had assignments to do. In other words, we had characters. We had to dress up like a character and then when we got there had a script to follow. I was a Mafia kingpin. (Laughter) Martha was my 16-year-old spoiled brat daughter. So all night she was taking selfies, rolling her eyes, constantly saying she was annoyed and bored. She was really enjoying that role, I got to tell you. (Laughter) And by the way, she did it, too. She was the one. So sometimes it's kind of fun to do pretend stuff, but there's another side, a dangerous kind of pretending. We'll see that today in "A Tale of Two Gifts." All right point number one for those of you taking notes as, again, I know all of you do -- number one, ministry is sustained by generosity. Ministry sustained by generosity. Here's the first of these gift stories we'll read. Acts 4:32. (reading) "All the believers were one in heart and mind." Isn't that fantastic? So here you have the early church, 3,000 people baptized on the Day of Pentecost and more. Some of you, it's time to take your step of baptism. Come into the kingdom. Come into God's church. There they were of one heart and mind. "No one claimed any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had." "With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God's grace was so powerfully at work in them all, so much so that" -- listen to this -- "There were no needy persons among them." That doesn't say there were no needy persons in Jerusalem but in the church among God's people. There were no needy persons among them. "For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, and they brought the money from the sales and they put it at the apostles' feet. Then it was distributed to anyone who had need." This is fantastic. I think one of the great qualities of the early church is their AMAZING generosity, and it wasn't forced. This is not communism. It was completely voluntary, and it was done out of love to support and create this -- they created this culture of care, not a needy one among them. , brought their money and they put it at the apostles' feet." In other words, saying to the church leaders, "Look, here it is, no strings. You know the landscape better than we do. Use it and distribute it according toingly." now you meet a real key player in this move of generosity. His name is Joseph but the apostles gave him a nickname, Mr. Encouragement, Barnabas. "Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus whom the apostles called Barnabas, which means son of encouragement, sold a field he owned, brought the money, and put it at the apostles' feet." So here, you got this businessman who obviously has some resources. He owns a field, sells the field, takes the ENTIRE proceeds from this, brings it to the apostles, and says, "Here; use this and distribute it as you see fit." You're going to see this Barnabas character six times in the book of Acts and EVERY time he's up to something good. I read a description of Barnabas in here and will put it on the screen for you. "Barnabas lays money down and picks people up." You're going to see that six times in the book of Acts. Here's your introduction to him. So all of us care about what is going on in Ukraine and it's a terrible thing. I do want you to know that we are sending money. We will send more money. We have connections with the Munich Church of Christ in Germany. They are taking in and hosting a number of Ukrainian refugees. You need to know, though, God's people, particularly in Europe and Eastern Europe, they're stepping up to do SO many encouraging things with resources, opening up homes, Christian camps. For example, one of the things we will help support is a Christian camp in Germany that is sort of being retrofitted to host a number of refugees. Ministry is sustained by the sacrificed dollars and cents of God's people. Secondly, ministry is stained by hypocrisy. It's stained by hypocrisy. So here you have Mr. Encouragement, Barnabas. He's done something and, you know, it's public knowledge. It's okay for it to be public knowledge. Everybody knows. But you have a couple in the church who say, "Hey, let's get some of that applause for ourselves." They were envious and jealous of Barnabas and so they cook up a scheme. Here's the scheme -- Acts 5:1. Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. You see how the stories are connected, the Barnabas and Ananias story? They also sold a piece of property. Avenue by the way, this is the most difficult text in the book of Acts to preach, teach, and study. In fact, there are some lectionaries that completely skip over Acts 5. >> Their sin was in keeping some but saying they gave it all. They were under in obligation to give it all. Their sin was in saying they were giving it all and that wasn't the truth. Hmm. And he dropped dead instantly and you're saying isn't the age of grace, the New Testament, not the Old Testament and this happening? Even in the New Testament God has great concern for the purity and integrity of His church. This happened in the baby infant stages. Even in 2022 we're still taught to pray our father who is in heaven, may your name and reputation be holy. So the story's not over. About three hours later verse seven, later his wife came in not knowing what had happened. And Peter asked her. Listen, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door and they will carry you out also. And at that moment she fell down at his feet and decide. She did, too. And then the young men came in and turns again tough day. And finding her dead carried her out and buried her beside her husband. You know, this is probably a pretty good time for me to say a little something. Listen carefully. It is in your best interest to never follow your spouse into dishonoring the Lord. I have lost count of the number of times a husband has wanted to his wife or vice versa. It is in you Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events. Let me put verse 11 up here in the message version. "By this time the whole church and, in fact, everyone who heard of these things had a healthy respect for god." They knew God was not to be dried with." They gave some but thalloid about it and said they gave all. They were disciplined, NOT for not giving at all; they were disciplined for lying about it. They pursued image over integrity, and why did the Holy Spirit, why did the Lord act in such a bold and severe way here? Because my goodness, if every time one of us fibbed about something, I think our membership would get much smaller pretty quickly. Why did the lord act so severely here? The early stages of the church, great signs and wonders are being done; and this is a sign from God, "I am paying attention." This is a legitimate new move. The kingdom of God is here and if you think I am not paying attention, I am. For those of you who are bible students, you know the story as Israel moves into Canaan and that is a parallel to that episode. There are five lessons I want to draw quickly. Number one: You can be generous, you can be; and here's how I know: Because god has been generous to you. Generosity is relative. We grow in generosity, and what is generous for you may not be generous for me; what is generous for me may not be generous for you, but God has been generous to us. The ministry of the church, the ministry of the work of God, it is sustained and only sustained by the generosity of God's people. Secondly, we cannot hide from God. Some of us think we're pretty savvy, and you might be able to fool me. I will believe the best in you. I might be able to fool you; you cannot fool God. Everything is open and laid bare. And for some of us today, we might need to come to grips again and say, "You know what? I have been trying to fool Him. I need to turn and repent and move a new direction." Thirdly, there is a place for a healthy fear of God, a healthy fear of God. Yes, God delights to draw close and is full of mercy and compassion. Wherever there is much sin, grace can outgrow it and cover it; but there is a place for a healthy fear. Without it -- you know, without a healthy fear -- I have a lot of healthy fear of a lot of things. I'm gonna be grilling something later today for lunch. I have a healthy fear for propane tanks. I have a healthy fear for driving at night if my headlights are out. I have a healthy fear of wading through a swamp. There are lot of things I have a healthy fear of, and you should. And if you cut out a healthy fear of God, what happens is you start to get flippant and think you will deal with Fod on your terms, not God's. You don't return; you don't repent; you don't apologize. The fear of the Lord is a combination of awe and intimacy. The fear of the Lord is real but listen, as believers, the love of God is also real, so very real. So what happens is we are in a place of safety. We're covered. We're in the ark, if you will. The storm is out there, and we can, through the windows, see, "Uh-oh." We can see the storm from the safety of where we are. We in a refuge of God's grace, and it's that refuge of grace that causes us to say "Our God is great and awesome." But if you are the kind of person who feels that coming to Jesus Christ gives you a Visa card to sin with impunity, that would not be a healthy attitude. Al Smith, many, many years ago, was a four-term governor of New York. He was very well-liked -- again, four terms. His nickname was "The Happy Warrior." People really appreciated Al Smith. One day -- there he is, governor of New York -- he was invited to direct a sales convention at a large hotel in New York City. When he arrived, he discovered that everybody was pretty sauced. They had been drinking heavily, and the emcee was pretty loaded. It was a very irreverent buffoonish environment. The emcee, when he's going to introduce Al Smith, the governor of New York, he just sort of mumbled his words. He put his arm around him and said, "Everybody, I give you a great guy! Al Smith." And Al Smith, who was easy-going, said these words: "Gentlemen, when I was a little boy, my father took me to a great parade. We watch with as all the soldiers came Marched down in order in-step, carrying the flag, carrying their rifle, and proudly so. We watched the firemen and police come by and then suddenly my father said to me, `son, take off your hat. The governor of New York is about to pass by. ' And I felt my father stiffen in respect, and I took off my cap." Then Al Smith said to that intoxicated bunch that night, "Gentlemen, the governor of New York bids you good night." Then he walked out. There is a place for healthy respect, and there is, in the church, there is a place for a healthy respect and fear of the Lord covered in His grace and mercy; but there's a beautiful balance that is good for us. Number four: Don't turn our community into a contest. Don't turn the church into competition. Ananias and Sapphira did that. "We're not getting press Barnabas or applause." Who knows? Maybe they had given a field and 100% of the proceeds earlier and they just didn't get much press for it. Who knows? I don't know. Here's what they did. They turned it into a competition. You know, in this world, things are always so competitive. P. Who's bigger; stronger; prettier; this -- but in the kingdom of god, has Joel was illustrating earlier, you humble yourself. You let God lift you up. You let God applaud. Whenever we turn church into competition, into a contest, everybody loses. You lose; your circle around you loses; and last of all, a lack of holiness prevent God from doing in our lives what He wants to do. Listen carefully: God wants to do really good things in your life and mine. He does, and let me just say, how many of you want to be used by God? I believe you all do but on a scale of 1-10, sort of respond to that. Do I want God to use me, to work through me? And there's nothing, no thrill like being used by God to change the direction of someone's life; to be a voice of encouragement; to minister to someone; to pray for another person; to minister the Word of God; to serve and partner in some way. Nothing beats being used by God. Listen, that joy and privilege is not confined to a few people and not just about giftedness. If we don't pay attention to our own character and our own integrity, it will sabotage how God can use us. There's a scripture that illustrates this. 2 Timothy 2:19. "Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inScripps." Your life, you're like a temple and there's writing on you, not cheap graffiti. God has engraved something on you, two enScrippses. Here's the first statement. "The lord knows those who are His." That's you, a wonderful statement of grace and mercy. The Lord know who are His. He knows you; He sees you; He loves you; His mercy knows no bound and covers and knows those whose hearts are turned to Him. You know what? I'm thankful for that. The bible said God gives us a new name. I need a new game because if you want to throw an acquisition against Ronnie Norman, get in line. They will all stick, virtually all of them. If you want to throw an accusation at my new name that God has given me in the grace and blood of Jesus, that's not going to stick. That's covered with Christ. The Lord knows those who are His. here's the beautiful counterpart. It's a balance here. Here's another statement. "Everyone who confesses the Name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness." He says, look, having been given a new name, having this wonderful destiny that you have as a believer, here, you have a new identity. You belong to the Living God and those who have this new identity and this heavenly destiny, don't cheapen the calling. Turn away from wickedness. And he said in verse 20, he gives an illustration of it. "In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver but also wood and clay; some are for special purpose and some for common use." Think about your house. You have maybe some gold and silver in your house. You also have a mop in there and a mop bucket in there and things that are cheap in your house. Verse 21. "Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work." He said, "Ronnie, in your life and your character, there's some gold and silver there; but Ronnie, in your life and character, there's also some wood and clay. There's some mop buckets in your character. Here's what I need you to do. If you really want to be more useful to Me -- not just go to heaven -- be more useful to Me -- why don't you take some of those mop buckets and those pieces of wood and clay and jettison those?" In other words, pay attention not just to your image but beg -- integrity and character and invite the Holy Spirit to shine a light and be open to that. Don't be defensive to it because normally what will happen is He will point to some piece of immaturity we like to hold on to or maybe some inertia that's there. He says, if you will be sensitive to this -- I'm not saying pick a scab and be guilt-ridden but be sensitive to this and say, "I want to take the mop products of my character. I want to take the wooden pieces and jettison those so the gold and silver might shine." He said, "You belong to Me; but let Me help you and deal with some matters that are just out of place for God's high purposes in your life." Sometimes we need our feet washed, don't we? Just like Jesus said, "Peter, let Me wash your feet." "Lord, that's beneath You.." "No, it's not." Here we walk in a dirty world. We stumble and falter and have to come to the Lord regularly. "Lord, would You wash my feet again? Wash my feet one more time?" As I close -- and Gary, why don't you make your way up here, please -- this was a tale of two gifts. The second gift involved a lie, but I want to close with something that's absolutely true and don't want you to forget this. No one loves you like Jesus Christ. For God so love you He gave His only begotten Son; that who so far believes in Him shall NOT perish but have everlasting life." You're invited no matter where you have been or what sin is on your record to run to the Lor and be baptized in His Name and part of the new community. Don't you EVER believe the lie that you are beyond the boundaries of God's grace and that you are beyond the boundaries of God's usefulness, either. Thank you for being with us today, whether you're here in the room or online. May the Lord bless you and keep you. Gary, would you lead us, please, in our prayer? >> Gary: Let us pray. Father God, thank You for the Word, Your Word; Your Word that can and does transform our hearts. We came here this morning, Father. We came and hopefully we all grew and now we go. Be with us as we enter the world it is the mission field. It could be amongst family; friends; coworkers; people we run into wherever. Give us a desire and a hunger to share the Gospel. Father, as a body of believers we hold up the many concerns in our world right now. What is top of mind is Ukraine. We have brothers and sisters that from being persecuted and are hiding and afraid of what is gonna happen. We just pray for protection over them. We pray, Father, You would put upon our heart a heart of generosity. What ways can we help them, Lord? How can we pray for them? What can we give in resources to provide for them? Father, we pray for our church here at First Colony. We thank You that everyone that You use today to prepare us for worship -- Sunday School classes; the music; the sermon. We pray, Father, that's ingrained in our heart. Lord, we pray for unity. We have different views on different things, but let us be united in Jesus. Lord, we hold up our elders and leaders, that You would guide them and give them insight; that You would protect them from the evil one. Lord, we pray for a willingness to just work together as one body. We pray that You open our hearts and give us a desire to serve in areas whether it be on stage or behind the scenes but to do it with the joy and the hunger to bring glory and honor to Your Name. Father, we put up to You our children and grandchildren, especially, Lord, if they aren't saved. We pray that You save them. We pray that You bring people and circumstances into their lives; that they see You. And lastly, Father, we than You for Your Holiness as we see Your Holiness; Your Purity; your joy of giving that You did through Your Son. Give us that joy, the joy to serve You with all our hearts. Help us not to leave here guilty but here reassured You have cleansed us and that You will begin and do a work in us that You started. We love You. In Jesus' Name, amen. >> Grant: Amen. Thank you so much, Gary. Church, there are lot of great things going on at First Colony Church of Christ so let's make sure they're on your calendar. Every Sunday 9:45, we have great classes here. It will be a great really fun event. Sign up online for that one. Next Sunday is our clothing drive. Pack up those clothes; bring them in a good bag from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 next Sunday. We will bless our community. All right, folks. It has been a blessing to worship with you this morning. Let's stand and close with one more song today. >> Yes, let's stand together! ("Great Things" playing) >> Richard: Thank you, church, for worshiping with us today! Have a blessed week! You are dismissed!
